Sports Cities Series a–z

An exploration in type design and capturing the vibe of sports cities (and towns) representing each letter of the alphabet. The only requirement for a city to make the cut was it had to have at one time been the location of a professional sports team.

Each character is designed to represent the place and the teams they’re known for (or not known for). Every team color is represented—even color ways of jerseys long gone. Look close to catch subtle nods to what makes each sports city unique along with a list of the teams that call each city home.

A fair amount of research went into this project and plenty of useless facts were dug up along the way. Did you know Youngstown Ohio was home of the Patricians (the original “Pats”)—founded by an organization connected to a local church—who in 1915 became world champions of pro football? You probably didn’t. You’re welcome.

Research is a massive part of what we do at Metz Design Co. You have to find what matters to make something special.
