Man u. Redo

Manchester United is one of the most iconic and storied brands in the recorded history of sports. Their emblem is one of the most recognizable, though there’s something not quite right about their current mark. Look close. The illustration and composition are not fitting of a club of this level.

Why haven’t they corrected this? Who knows. Our theory: When it was last refreshed in 1998 it was considered too sacred to upend—even if what remained is a copy of a xerox of a fax from the original.

So, we dove into a just-for-fun Man U redo to fix the garbled red devil and other weird bits while still maintaining the brand recognition of a mark used for decades. And we threw in some secondary marks. Details, people. Details.

Notable updates: 1. Flipping the trident to create an “M” with a hidden “U” in the recess. 2. Revising the red devil, paying homage to the original illustrations. 3. Bringing back the Manchester stripes as the sails of the ship. 4. Reintroducing “F.C.” for better balance (they probably dropped this to be more than a “football club” but this is just for fun so design wins). 5. Bringing back the styling the footballs from the emblem used in the 40’s and 50’s.
